What does a cryptocurrency recovery expert actually do?

A cryptocurrency recovery expert analyses blockchain evidence and documents where stolen funds went. A genuine one states what they cannot do: no expert can guarantee recovery, freeze funds, compel an exchange or reverse a transaction. Ask any expert directly what they cannot do — a legitimate investigator answers clearly, a fraud deflects.

Engagement types

How this usually works.

Litigation support

Tracing and analysis inside an existing matter, documented to the standard your filing requires.

Second opinion

Independent review of another party's blockchain analysis, including where we disagree with it.

Report review

Reading a report you have received and telling you which claims are supported by what.

Investigator support

Working alongside a corporate or private investigation team that owns the wider matter.

Internal incident

Support to a company's own security or finance function after an incident.

Training and briefing

Bringing a legal or compliance team up to speed on what blockchain evidence can and cannot show.

Working boundaries

What we do and do not take on.

Analysis, tracing and documentation within an agreed scope
Written methodology that another analyst could follow
Clear separation of observed fact from inference
Direct answers about what the analysis does not establish
Legal advice — we are not lawyers and do not act as any
Representations about regulatory status we do not hold
Opinions we cannot evidence, however useful they would be
Work outside the agreed scope without a written variation
Judging expertise

What makes a trusted cryptocurrency recovery expert, and how to check

The best recovery experts for cryptocurrency are the ones most willing to tell you when they cannot help. That is not a slogan — it is the only signal that is hard to fake.

Crypto recovery experts are not licensed or accredited anywhere, because no such credential exists. Any recovery agent claiming certification to recover assets is describing something that has not been issued. What you can assess instead is method: whether the expert explains how conclusions are reached, expresses confidence levels, and states plainly where analysis becomes inference.

Asset-specific expertise matters less than people expect. A USDT recovery expert and a bitcoin specialist apply the same clustering and attribution methods; what differs is the chain’s mechanics and which services dominate its cash-out routes. Be more sceptical of someone marketing narrow asset expertise than of someone explaining their method.

The question that sorts them

Ask directly what they cannot do. A genuine expert answers immediately and specifically. A fraud deflects, reassures, or changes the subject to how much they have recovered before.

What a real engagement looks like

A free assessment, a written scope, a quoted fee, and a report that states its own limitations. No contingency fee, because that incentivises promising an outcome nobody controls.

Report it first

Before you pay anyone, report the theft.

Reporting is free, it takes minutes, and it is the step most likely to matter. Do it before you engage us or any other investigator. A tracing report is far more useful to an exchange or a prosecutor when a formal complaint already exists to attach it to.

01

FBI IC3

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. The primary US route for crypto theft and fraud. File here even if the amount feels small — IC3 aggregates reports, and clusters get investigated.

02

FTC ReportFraud

The Federal Trade Commission’s fraud reporting service. Covers scams, impersonation and investment fraud, and feeds a database used by law enforcement across the US.

03

CFTC

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The right route where the loss involves crypto derivatives, leveraged trading or a fraudulent trading platform.

04

SEC

The Securities and Exchange Commission. Use this where the asset or scheme was presented as an investment, a token sale or a fund.

05

Your local police

File a report in your own jurisdiction and keep the reference number. Banks, exchanges and insurers frequently require it, and it is often the precondition for any formal request to a service.

If you are outside the United States

Report to your national fraud or cybercrime body and to your local police. If a card or bank transfer was involved at any point, contact your bank immediately — that is the one channel where speed can still change the outcome.

Tracing is not recovery

Blockchain analysis establishes where funds went and whether an intervention point exists. Whether anything is recovered depends on where the funds landed, how quickly you acted, and whether a cooperating exchange or authority sits at the end of the path. Read exactly what we can and cannot do, and how to spot a recovery scam before you pay anybody.
